Biology 11 Disease Essay

Living with Leukemia

by Emer Bryan C. Vicente

Leukemia is a type of cancer of the bone marrow or blood, categorized by increasing the size of white blood cells. When you are diagnose with cancer, you'll ask yourself how did you gain this type of disease. Nobody has an accurate answer of how or what causes leukemia. There are two general types of leukemia, but there are other common types of leukemia based on the type of white blood cells. The two general types are acute and chronic. The issues that might concern people who are diagnose with leukemia are the effects of this type of cancer to your health, family problems and financial difficulties towards medicine or treatment. I chose this type of disease because, my mother's sister has leukemia and passed away.

Be very cautious when you have leukemia because, it can't produce enough cells such as white and red blood cells, also it disables the cell to fight off any other infection diseases. Although, having a healthy, and active body it can reduce the effects of leukemia, which are: fatigue, fever, easy bruising, bone or joint pain, and enlargement of organ parts like spleen. It is best to see a doctor and have yourself be tested if you have leukemia. Few test to diagnose leukemia are: physical exam, blood test or biopsy. My aunt who had chronic leukemia was very ill, but this type of cancer did not let her stop from working. My mother doesn't know much about my aunt's situation or anything about the disease. My aunt probably didn't even had the chance to have it check, which led her to her death. In my opinion, having leukemia and also over working without treatment will have the diagnose person a slim chance of surviving.

Dealing leukemia alone is scary and terrifying, but with the help of family members, your survival chance is glorious instead of a horrible death that no one tried to help you. It is important for family members to aid the diseased person with leukemia because, they bruised easily and less energetic. My aunt and her family lives in a developing country where poverty occurs and inefficient medical care occurs, making it worst is that my aunt kept on working. She works as a teacher on an elementary school with 2 twin children. My family members aren't quite sure how long my aunt has leukemia and there's a possibility she kept it to herself. Between where my family lives and my aunt's family is far, Manila to Vancouver. If I or anyone in my family known that my aunt has this type of cancer, we would have done anything to save her, but there's a chance if we did everything we could she would still end up passing away.

Leukemia can be surely be treated, but it's mainly based on the person's age, type of leukemia, and whether the disease cell is found in the cerebrospinal fluid. There are different treatments for both type of leukemia, but has the main goal; to eliminate the disease permanently. This types of treatment are: chemotherapy, radiation therapy or stem cell transplant and few more. As I said in the previous paragraphs my aunt lives in a developing country and their medical care are poorly efficient, but works. Most treatment in Manila are expensive to pay in cash. My aunt's family living style is average there, but compare it in Canada, it has a huge difference. It's above poverty but below average, basically it would be a struggle to live in a developing even if your living standards are average.

Every type of disease that result to death, should be fought alone, but together there's a chance of survival. Nobody wants to die without knowing they were infected with a dangerous disease. A tip for every human being still living; stay healthy, take care of yourself well and be active in order to prevent from harmful infections. It doesn't hurt you when you're living healthy, but it does if have any type of diseases.
